Grade 9 - (Genre Based) covers all genres including drama, short stories, novels and poems.

Grade 10 - (World Literature) covers literature from around the world.

Grade 11 - (American Literature) covers major American writers.

Grade 12 - (British Literature) covers classic works of English literature.

ENGLISH ELECTIVES

Journalism I - is designed to prepare students for Journalism II & III and yearbook. Students learn copyediting symbols, interviewing, layout, and how to write features, editorials, and news stories. Recommended for 10th grade students. Students must be proficient in writing.

Technical Writing - is a writing intensive course in which students are instructed in various academic and business writing styles. A heavy emphasis is placed on expressing ideas clearly within a prescribed structure. Grammatical and punctuation concepts are also covered.

Film Appreciation and Criticism - encourages students to use critical thinking, creative writing, and language skills to enhance interest in and knowledge about motion picture development and production process. The course teaches students to explore film as a medium of communication and helps them become more visually literate. Recommended for 11th and 12th grade students.

Journalism II (Honors)
Journalism III (Honors) - Students in Journalism II & III publish the WOLVERINE, Western's newspaper. They should be capable writers who are willing to interview strangers for details, which they must quickly use to fashion into a news article, feature, or editorial. This is an HONORS course and a major prerequisite is GOOD, moldable WRITING SKILLS.

PSAT/SAT Review - (Verbal Portion) focuses on test familiarity, test strategies and high frequency vocabulary for the verbal portions, utilizing sample tests and individual software. This course is designed for college-bound students.
