She's In Me by Niara Spence

Grade 10 student, Niara Spence, will represent Western Tech at the at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum as part of its 10th Annual High School Juried Art Show.

Niara Spence's piece received 2nd place honors in the show for her digital artwork titled She’s In Me.  Niara commented, “She’s In Me was an assignment for my Digital Art class that needed to combine a person’s face who we admired with our own in an innovative way. I chose Rosa Parks as my hero because she was an activist who was influential in the Civil Rights Movement who stood her ground even though she was pressured to waive. This is why I have the word ‘Brave’ at the bottom of my artwork. I decided to put different pictures of Rosa Parks inside of my own portrait to show the different, important stages of her life.”

The show, which includes 27 pieces by students from throughout Maryland (including artwork by 10 BPCS students), will be exhibited through Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the museum, located at 830 E. Pratt St. in Baltimore. This year’s exhibition focused on portraits of famous African Americans and much of the artwork was inspired by the work of artists Jacob Lawrence and Terrence A. Reese.

A reception was held on Monday, Jan. 15, to honor the student artists. During this event, a special presentation was made by guest speaker Joan M. E. Gaither, Ph.D., whose documentary-style quilts also are on display at the museum.
